Community Living Services

  • Community Living Workers
    The Community Living Worker is a part of a team that ensures each resident living within the group home has the opportunity and support for independence, learning and self-expression according to their individual abilities and preferences. The employees help to create and maintain a comfortable home environment, and provide assistance with activities of daily living and active participation of the client in the community.

Qualifications

Community Living Educational and Job Qualification Requirements

    • Post-secondary certificate in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
    • Current "Emergency Adult Care" First aid and Cardio-pulmonary certification
    • Valid Class 4 BC Driver's Licence (restricted or unrestricted)

Community Living Job Skills and Abilities

    • Competency in written and verbal communication
    • Ability in conflict resolution and personnel interaction
    • Ability to work independently but within a team environment
    • Ability to work under pressure while still maintaining time restrictions

Home Support

  • Community Health Workers
    The Community Health Worker II assists clients, including seniors and individuals with physical and mental disabilities, within their homes with activities of daily living to promote maximum independence.

Qualifications
Community Health Worker II Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a provincially recognized Health Care Assistant training course.
  • Registration on the BC Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry (http://www.cachwr.bc.ca)

Community Health Worker II Skills and Abilities

    • Must be able to understand English and communicate in English both orally and in writing.
    • Must be able to work in cooperation with Supervisors and other health care professionals.
    • Must be able to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
    • Must have the physical and mental ability to perform required job duties.

Training Programs

Process for Obtaining a Class 4 License

  • Currently must have a valid Class 5 or 6 with fewer than 4 tickets that carry penalty points in the past 2 years and no criminal motor vehicle convictions in the past 3 years.
  • Class 4 RESTRICTED - can drive up to 9 passengers
  • Class 4 UNRESTRICTED - can drive up to 24 passengers
  • Apply for Learner's Licence:
    1. Study Driving Commercial Vehicles and RoadSense for Drivers
    2. Complete application form
    3. Bring 2 pieces of photo I.D.
    4. Take Knowledge and Road Signs Test
    5. Meet required medical standards (Vision, Hearing & Physical/Mental Condition)

Learning to drive a commercial vehicle:

2 main training options available

  • 40 hours of practice with a qualified commercial vehicle driver
  • Professional training through an ICBC or a private driver training school (look in Yellow Pages under Driving Schools)

Road Test

If going for Class 4 UNRESTRICTED, you will need to provide your own 12-15 passenger van for the test

If going for Class 4 RESTRICTED, you can bring any vehicle

Pre-trip inspection test is part of the road test - need to know how, when and why you complete a pre-inspection

Road test includes: starting/stopping, shifting gears, backing up, parking, merging and exiting on highway, handling traffic

If you pass road test, a licensed physician will need to complete your medical fitness form
